Planting Our Future
Sustainable Development
Goal # 2
Zero Hunger
This goal is to end hunger around the world, improve nutrition, and achieve food security, while promoting sustainable agriculture.
Northwest coast communities are especially at risk for food scarcity due to the rising costs of food and shipping.
Planning ahead and becoming sustainable is a preventative method to combat the serious risk of food insecurity.
Why Climate Change Matters
Climate change effects our global food system.
Severe weather creates flooding and drought, which reduces the amount of food farms can produce.
When food becomes scarce, prices rise.
Rural communities will be impacted the most because of already high food and shipping costs.
Growing your own food lowers greenhouse gas emissions and improves your local economy.

What is Food Security?
Do you have reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food?
a. Yes = Food Security
b. No = Food Insecurity
Northern communities have a band store. They don't have access to big box stores. All products have high shipping costs, so everything is expensive so the store can turn a profit. Since the store is usually the only store, they can set their prices at whatever they want.
Process food is cheap and it lasts longer than fresh food, a consequence of this is diabetes.
